A Beginner's Guide to Matcha Whisks

There's no better way to start your mornings (or relax in the evenings) than with a delicious cup of matcha. Making your own matcha is a cheaper and more rewarding way to get your fix, but where do you start? Is a whisk really an essential to get the best quality tea? We've answered your most asked questions in order to get you brewing!

What's the History behind the Whisk?

The Japanese matcha whisk, also known as a Chasen, was first produced in the Japanese Village Yuwa Takayama during the 14th century. Traditional Japanese tea ceremonies were originally only performed by the rich and elite, who held grand ceremonies and only invited guests in high society. As time progressed, this tradition was shared throughout all Japanese citizens. The Tea Ceremony was reimagined to represent a bond between host and guest: the shared peace and unity over a cup of matcha benefiting both the physical and mental well-being. Chasen have been used and unchanged during these ceremonies over the centuries, and even today almost 90% of Chasen created come from the original region on Japan.

This video from Ocha & Co. goes more in depth into production of the Chasen:

Why use a whisk?

A bamboo matcha whisk, also known as Chasen, is the traditional and preferred mixing method for a reason. The multiple wooden prongs allow the matcha powder to break down much easier, resulting in both a smoother and more flavorful drink. Although it is possible to make matcha without one, the many prongs allow the powder to dissolve smoother and create a much better froth than a whisk or electric mixer could. We highly recommend preparing matcha the tried and true way; you'll definitely be able to taste the difference!

Now that I've bought one, how do I use it?

Matcha whisks are incredibly simple to use, as long as you know where to start! Before using your whisk, we recommend soaking it for a few minutes in hot water. By doing this before each use, the bristles soften slightly which allows for easier whisking.

Add your matcha powder to your bowl followed by the required amount of hot water. Begin whisking using a W or M shaped stir, and avoid scratching the bottom of the bowl to avoid damaging the bristles on your whisk. Continue this for about 30 seconds or until the matcha reaches your desired froth and enjoy!!

How do I care for and store my whisk?

After making your matcha, it is important to clean your whisk and bowl properly afterward. Add hot water to your now empty matcha bowl and whisk to remove any leftover residue. After rinsing your whisk, place it back on its holder to help it keep its shape and last longer and dry the bowl. You may notice slight staining or curling of the prongs, which is perfectly normal. It is important to still rinse your whisk after each use to maintain your whisk's quality and avoid mold.
